School Style

The Downton School of Tai Chi practices the Wu Style Short Form, developed by B.K. Frantzis from the Wu Long Form taught to him by his teacher, Taoist lineage master Liu Hung Chieh, himself a disciple of the founder of Wu Style Tai Chi, Wu Jien Chuan.

The Wu Style Short Form is the ideal vehicle for anyone new to Tai Chi who wants an introduction to its principles without compromising the deeper benefits to health and vitality. Containing only 18 moves and lasting around four or five minutes, it is easy and quick enough for the busiest person to practice each day.

When you begin learning the Short Form, you are taught the Body Mechanics - a fully detailed description of the movements that are exactly true to the original mechanics of the Long Form. When learning Tai Chi for the first time, it is essential to understand the basic principles of body mechanics. Without this understanding the Tai Chi movements will have little meaning and will bring few health benefits.

Only after sufficient practice, generally lasting for several years, will most students be ready to move on the Energy Mechanics of the form, where the true long-term benefits of Tai Chi will become apparent.
